Why stomatitis happens!
The inside of your mouth is exposed to countless irritations every day. So even eating something hot or accidentally biting the inside of your mouth can cause a wound. When bacteria or viruses get into that opening, inflammation develops and leads to stomatitis.
It's especially likely to occur when you're tired, your immunity is low, or you're under a lot of stress.2 common types of stomatitis!
Aphthous stomatitis👿
The cause isn't clear, but it appears as a round white ulcer with a red, swollen center that's slightly sunken. It hurts when you eat or talk, and in most cases it heals naturally in about a week.
Herpetic stomatitis🦠
There is also viral stomatitis, such as herpetic stomatitis, which is characterized by multiple blisters around the mouth and is contagious. Don't pop the blisters, and avoid close contact with others until it heals.
Do you wear dentures?🧐
It can also be caused by an infection with the fungus 'Candida albicans' due to poor denture care. It's characterized by a white film on the tongue or inner cheeks, and some people mistake it for something stuck there, so be careful not to rub it off with your fingers or a toothbrush. Irritating it this way can cause bleeding or damage to the lining of your mouth.
