Do implants really hurt?π―
"Won't implant surgery hurt?" This is the most common worry people have before getting implant treatment. But these days, technology and anesthesia methods have advanced so much that you don't need to think of it as the painful surgery it once was.
What kind of treatment is an implant?π§
An implant is a treatment in which an artificial tooth root (fixture) is placed in the jawbone to act as a root, so it functions like a natural tooth.
Teeth may need to be removed because of aging, but also for many other reasons, such as cavities, periodontal disease, fractures from injury, and systemic conditions like diabetes or osteoporosis.
That's why, when planning an implant, it's important to consider not only each person's remaining gum and bone condition but also their overall health.
Why does treatment take so long?π§
After the root is placed, implants need an 'osseointegration period' for the bone to firmly attach. This usually takes about 3 to 6 months, and when multiple teeth are placed, it can take up to a year.
I'm still too scared to do it!π±
If fear is making you hesitate about treatment, sedation (conscious sedation) can be a good option.
Sedation relieves tension and puts you into a drowsy, semi-sleep state. Unlike general anesthesia, where you fall completely asleep, you can receive treatment in a hazy state while still being able to communicate to some extent.
This method helps people with strong fear or those who need several teeth placed at once. Local anesthesia during the procedure also helps ease worries about pain.
Precautions for sedationπ
With implants, not putting them off matters more than being afraid.
The jawbone is gradually absorbed over time, so the later you start, the more complicated treatment can become :)
